Etihad Rail comfort vs premium comes down to seat space and price. Premium gives you a wider seat that reclines, more legroom and USB-C charging. Comfort costs far less: Dh39 against Dh109 between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Luggage allowance, fare types and journey times are the same in both classes.
Etihad Rail’s FAQ confirms there are only two Etihad Rail classes and no business class. Below is what the extra money buys on each route, and when we think it is worth paying. Starting fares for both classes on each route are listed in our Etihad Rail hub for Dubai travellers.
Comfort vs Premium class at a glance
| Comfort Class | Premium Class | |
| Dubai to Abu Dhabi fare | from Dh39 | from Dh109 |
| Seat | standard seat with charging point | wider seat that reclines at a button |
| Legroom | generous | noticeably more |
| Charging | charging points | USB and USB-C at every seat |
| Wi-Fi | reported | complimentary |
| Free luggage | two items | two items |
| Fare types | Saver, Value, Flex | Saver, Value, Flex |
Seat details come from Gulf News reporters who rode both classes in June and September 2026. Fares are the launch-week minimums.
How much more does Premium cost?
In the premium vs comfort sums, the gap is largest on the Abu Dhabi route and smallest on the short Al Dhaid to Fujairah hop.
| Route | Comfort from | Premium from | Difference |
| Dubai to Abu Dhabi (1h 4m) | Dh39 | Dh109 | Dh70 |
| Dubai to Fujairah (1h 10m) | Dh29 | Dh89 | Dh60 |
| Al Dhaid to Fujairah (25m) | Dh19 | Dh49 | Dh30 |
| Al Dhaid to Abu Dhabi (06:32 train, 1h 24m) | Dh69 | Dh149 | Dh80 |
Dubai fares come from Etihad Rail’s Dubai station page and launch reports. The Al Dhaid fares come from Khaleej Times. All fares are dynamic, and Premium on the 13:14 from Dubai was seen at Dh129.
Put another way, Premium roughly triples the fare on the Dubai routes.
For a commuter the gap adds up fast. One return trip a week between Dubai and Abu Dhabi costs from Dh78 in Comfort and from Dh218 in Premium at the lowest fares. That is Dh140 a week, or about Dh560 over four weeks, for a wider seat on a one-hour train. Very few people would pay that once they see the total.
What do you get in Premium Class?
Gulf News described the Premium seats as wider, in light grey, with noticeably more legroom than Comfort. Each seat reclines at the touch of a button. There are USB and USB-C charging ports at every seat, and Wi-Fi is complimentary.
That is a real upgrade on a longer trip. On a one-hour train it matters less. A Gulf News reporter who tried both on the Abu Dhabi to Dubai run wrote that she did not feel a dramatic difference.
What is the same in both classes?
More than most people expect. The two Etihad Rail classes share the same train and the same rules, so whether you book Premium or Comfort, these stay the same:
- Luggage: two free items per passenger, whatever the ticket type, as reported by Gulf News.
- Fare types: Saver, Value and Flex apply to both classes, with the same change and refund rules.
- Journey time: you are on the same train, so you arrive at the same moment.
- Charging and Wi-Fi: reported in both classes, with Premium adding USB-C.
- Rules: the same ID check, the same booking channels and no ladies-only section in either class, according to Etihad Rail.
Is Premium worth it?
For most trips, no. Faced with comfort or premium on a one-hour train, book Comfort and keep the Dh70.
Premium makes sense in three cases. The first is a work trip where you want space to open a laptop. The second is the Al Dhaid to Abu Dhabi route, which at 1 hour 24 minutes is one of the longer journeys on the network. The third is when you have a bad back or long legs, because the extra legroom and recline are the upgrade you can actually feel.
For the 25-minute run from Al Dhaid to Fujairah, the premium vs comfort choice barely matters. You will hardly have time to use the recline.
Choosing comfort or premium also depends on the fare type. A Premium Saver ticket that you cannot change is a worse deal than a Comfort Flex ticket if your plans might move.
Can you upgrade or switch class after booking?
It depends on your fare type. Etihad Rail says some fares allow you to change your journey and others do not, and any change is subject to availability and the fare difference.
In practice, a Saver ticket locks you in. With a Value or Flex fare you should be able to go into My Bookings in the app, look for a Premium seat on the same train and pay the difference. If Premium is sold out, you stay where you are.
We have not seen an onboard upgrade option published by Etihad Rail. Do not count on one.
A cheaper way to get more space
Etihad Rail’s FAQ says you can buy the seat next to you to keep it empty, at the applicable fare, subject to availability. If the train fills and Etihad Rail needs that seat for another passenger, it refunds what you paid for it.
On the Dubai to Abu Dhabi route, two Comfort seats at Dh39 each cost Dh78. That is less than one Premium seat from Dh109. You do not get the reclining seat, but you get elbow room and a place for your bag. For a parent with a small child, this is often the better buy.
What we could not confirm
Reports disagree on onboard food and drink by class. One Gulf News account says refreshments were served in both classes, while another publisher says Comfort passengers pay for food. We have left it out until Etihad Rail publishes its own details.
Some reports also mention a premium lounge at stations. Etihad Rail’s FAQ does not yet say which tickets give access, so do not book Premium for the lounge alone.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Comfort and Premium on Etihad Rail?
Premium Class has wider seats that recline at a button, noticeably more legroom and USB and USB-C charging at every seat, according to Gulf News. Comfort Class is the standard seat with charging points. Both classes share the same train, luggage allowance of two free items, fare types and journey times.
How much is Premium Class on Etihad Rail?
Premium starts at Dh109 between Dubai and Abu Dhabi and Dh89 between Dubai and Fujairah, based on launch-week fares. Comfort starts at Dh39 and Dh29 on those routes. Fares change with demand, and a Premium seat on the 13:14 from Dubai was seen at Dh129.
Does Etihad Rail have a business class?
No. Etihad Rail’s FAQ says there are two travel classes, Comfort Class and Premium Class. Premium offers additional benefits and more comfort, but there is no separate business or first class. There is also no ladies-only section at present, though staff can help if you need assistance during your journey.
Do Premium passengers get more luggage?
No. Gulf News reports that every passenger aged three and over gets two free items regardless of ticket type. That means one personal item under the seat and one cabin bag up to 55 x 40 x 23 cm in the overhead rack. Extra bags must be arranged in advance through Etihad Rail.
Choosing between Etihad Rail Comfort vs Premium on your next trip
Start with Comfort, then ask whether the trip is long, work-related or physically uncomfortable for you. If none of those apply, the Etihad Rail comfort vs premium question answers itself.
