The fastest nol card recharge is in the nol Pay app or at a Metro ticket machine, since both add money instantly. The RTA website, the Mahboub chatbot and bank apps work too, but the balance needs activating later. The minimum top-up is AED 5 in nol Pay or on the RTA website, and AED 20 at a ticket machine.
This is our full nol card Dubai guide. Every way to top up your nol card comes first, in detail. After that you’ll find the short version of everything else, from card types and fares to lost and student cards, with a link to the full guide for each.

What is a nol card, and which one do you have?
A nol card is RTA’s smart card for the Dubai Metro, tram and buses. You can also use it at RTA parking meters. There are four nol card types, and the type decides how you top it up.
Card | Price | What it holds | Where to top up | Maximum |
Red Ticket | AED 2 | Trips, not money | Metro ticket machines only | 10 trips or 5 day passes |
Silver | AED 25 (AED 19 credit) | Money | Any channel | AED 1,000, or AED 5,000 if registered |
Gold | AED 25 (AED 19 credit) | Money | Any channel | AED 1,000, or AED 5,000 if registered |
Blue (personal) | AED 70 (AED 20 credit) | Money | Any channel | AED 5,000 |
An anonymous card is one not registered to your name, and it can’t be blocked if you lose it. If you’re still choosing, our comparison of the four nol card types sets out the fares and rules for each colour.
Nol card recharge methods compared
RTA lists about a dozen top-up channels on its nol top-up service page. They fall into two groups. Some add the money instantly. Others are online channels where the balance waits until you activate it.
Channel | Minimum | Maximum per top-up | When you can use the money |
nol Pay app (card tapped on phone) | AED 5 | AED 150 | Straight away |
Metro ticket machine | AED 20 | AED 150 | Straight away |
Metro ticket office | AED 50 | AED 150 | Straight away |
Solar machine at a bus stop | AED 5 | AED 150 | Straight away |
Authorised retail agents | Not published | Not published | Straight away |
S’hail or RTA Dubai app | AED 5 (S’hail), AED 30 (RTA Dubai) | AED 150 | Straight away by NFC tap, later if you type the tag ID |
RTA website or Mahboub chatbot | AED 5 | AED 150 | After activation |
Dubai Now app | AED 20 | AED 150 | After activation |
Bank apps (Emirates NBD, Emirates Islamic, ADCB) | Set by the bank | Set by the bank | After activation |
RTA charges no fee for a nol top-up. Whatever the channel, an anonymous card can hold up to AED 1,000 and a personal or registered card up to AED 5,000.
Our pick is nol Pay if your phone can read the card, and a ticket machine for everyone else. Both are instant. Neither asks you to remember a second step.
Paying at a Metro ticket machine or ticket office
Every Metro station has ticket vending machines, and they are still the usual way to top up a nol card. Since 1 March 2025 the smallest amount they take is AED 20.
- Place the card on the machine’s reader. The balance appears on the screen.
- Choose the top-up option, then the amount.
- Pay by cash or bank card.
- Leave the card on the reader until the machine confirms, then take the receipt.
The ticket office in the same station also tops up cards, but its minimum is AED 50. Go to the office when a machine rejects your card, because staff can tell you whether it is faulty or expired.
If you only need a few dirhams to get through the gate, AED 20 can feel like a lot. nol Pay lets you add AED 5.
Using the nol Pay app
nol Pay is RTA’s own nol app. On a phone with NFC (the contactless chip used for tap payments), you recharge your nol card by holding it against the back of the phone. The money is on the card before you put it away.
- Open nol Pay and choose to top up a card.
- Enter an amount between AED 5 and AED 150.
- Pay by credit or debit card.
- Hold the card flat on the back of the phone until the app confirms.
If the tap fails, switch NFC on and try a different spot on the phone. RTA doesn’t publish a list of phones that can read a physical card, so some trial and error is normal.
A virtual nol card lives inside the app, so there is nothing to tap. RTA supports virtual cards only on compatible Samsung and Huawei devices. iPhone users need a physical card.
nol Pay can also top up on a schedule. RTA allows scheduled amounts from AED 20 to AED 500, and a guardian can set this up for family members’ cards linked to their account. For parents, this is the feature that saves the most hassle.
RTA website, Mahboub, S’hail and other apps
These channels let you top up a nol card online with only the tag ID, the 10-digit number printed on the card. You don’t need the card in your hand. That makes them handy for a child’s card, or for a card you left at home.
On the RTA website:
- Open RTA’s nol top-up service and enter the tag ID.
- Choose an amount from AED 5 to AED 150.
- Pay by card.
- Wait 45 minutes to 4 hours, then activate the balance, as explained further down.
Mahboub, RTA’s chatbot, works the same way. S’hail and RTA Dubai can do both: an NFC tap is instant, while a typed tag ID needs activation. RTA Dubai has the highest app minimum at AED 30, and Dubai Now starts at AED 20.
Bank apps, Careem, shops and bus-stop machines
According to RTA, customers of Emirates NBD, Emirates Islamic and ADCB can recharge a nol card from their banking app. These top-ups also need activation. Gulf News reports that ADCB adds a AED 1 fee, so check your own bank’s charges first.
Gulf News also describes topping up through Careem: open All Services, then Bills and Recharges, then nol, and add your tag ID. RTA’s own top-up page doesn’t list Careem. We would treat it as a backup, not a first choice.
Solar top-up machines at selected bus stops add credit instantly from AED 5, and Gulf News says they take cash only. RTA also lists authorised retail agents, with Gulf News naming Zoom and ENOC petrol station shops among them. RTA doesn’t publish a minimum for shops, so ask at the till.
Why is my nol top-up not showing?
Almost always because it is still pending. Money added on the RTA website, through Mahboub, by tag ID in an app or through a bank app sits in RTA’s system until two things happen. The 45-minute to 4-hour processing time has to pass. Then you tap the card somewhere that can activate it:
- nol Pay, S’hail, RTA Dubai or Dubai Now, using NFC
- any Metro gate (tap in and out within 2 minutes to avoid paying a fare)
- an RTA parking meter
- a solar top-up machine at a bus stop
A bus card reader won’t activate it. If you top up online and then board a bus, the card still shows the old balance.
You have 180 days from the top-up to activate it. If the card expires or is blocked before then, the pending amount can’t be loaded and you need to apply for a refund instead. To confirm the new figure afterwards, follow our nol balance check guide.
Topping up a Red Ticket
A Red Ticket works differently. It holds trips, not money, so there is no balance to add. You reload single trips or day passes, up to 10 trips or 5 daily passes at a time, and the ticket expires after 90 days. RTA lists only Metro ticket machines for reloading it.
If you find yourself reloading one more than a couple of times, switch. A Silver card saves AED 1 on every trip, and from the fifth trip it works out cheaper overall.
How much should you keep on the card?
RTA requires a minimum balance of AED 7.50 to use public transport, which is the Silver fare for a trip across more than 2 zones. It advises keeping AED 15, enough to get home again. Gold cards pay double on the Metro and tram, so keep more on those.
These are the single-trip fares from RTA’s nol fares page:
Card | 1 zone | 2 zones | More than 2 zones |
Silver or Blue | AED 3 | AED 5 | AED 7.50 |
Gold | AED 6 | AED 10 | AED 15 |
Red Ticket | AED 4 | AED 6 | AED 8.50 |
Students and seniors (Blue, 50% off) | AED 1.50 | AED 2.50 | AED 3.75 |
A commuter crossing 2 zones each way spends AED 10 a day on Silver, so a AED 50 nol top-up covers a five-day working week. For day passes, monthly passes and worked examples, see our Dubai Metro and bus fare guide.
Checking your nol balance
Check before you recharge your nol card, so you know how much to add. RTA’s website shows the balance from the tag ID alone, nol Pay gives a live figure when you tap the card, and Metro ticket machines show it on screen. Our step-by-step guide to checking your nol card balance covers every method, including why the online figure can lag behind recent trips.
Personal and student nol cards
A personal (Blue) nol card carries your name and is linked to your Emirates ID. It costs AED 70, including AED 20 credit, and you apply online with UAE Pass. It holds up to AED 5,000, and the balance is protected if the card goes missing. Our guide to the personal nol card walks through the application and delivery.
Students aged 5 to 23 at a school, college or university in the UAE get 50% off Metro, tram and bus fares on the same Blue card. The discount must be renewed every year. Our student nol card guide explains eligibility, documents and the KHDA shortcut.
Recharging a nol card works the same way whether it is personal, student or anonymous.
Lost or damaged nol card
Only personal and registered cards can be blocked. If one goes missing, apply for a replacement, then submit a refund request on the RTA website or in nol Pay. RTA blocks the old card within 48 hours and moves the balance to the new one free of charge. An anonymous Silver, Gold or Red card can’t be blocked, so its balance is gone with it.
That is the best reason to register a Silver card, which costs AED 30, before any big nol top-up. The full process, including damaged cards and cash refunds, is in our lost nol card guide.
Top-up mistakes that cost money
- Topping up an expired card. Silver, Gold and personal cards last 5 years. For 2 years after that you can spend what is left, but RTA won’t accept top-ups. If a nol top-up suddenly fails on an old card, check the expiry date first.
- Typing the wrong tag ID online. The money goes to whatever number you enter. Copy the 10 digits from the card itself.
- Using unofficial top-up or checker sites. Several websites with “nol” in their name ask for your tag ID and payment details. Stick to rta.ae, RTA’s own apps and the banks RTA names.
- Buying Gold instead of Silver. Both cost AED 25 at the machine, but every Metro and tram trip on Gold costs double.
- Cashing out leftover credit. A cash refund costs 2.5% of the balance or AED 5, whichever is higher. A transfer to another registered card is free.
Will topping up change in 2027?
Probably. The Dubai Media Office announced on 5 July 2026 that RTA’s new fare payment system was 72% complete and due by the end of the first quarter of 2027. Once it is live, the gates are set to accept bank cards and digital wallets, alongside nol cards and QR tickets.
That could make topping up your nol card optional for some riders. RTA hasn’t said what will happen to existing balances or anonymous cards, so check the latest rules before loading a large amount in early 2027.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum top-up for a nol card?
It varies by channel. RTA sets AED 5 in nol Pay, S’hail and Mahboub, on its website and at solar machines. The minimum is AED 20 at Metro ticket machines and in Dubai Now, AED 30 in the RTA Dubai app and AED 50 at a ticket office. Each top-up is capped at AED 150.
Can I recharge my nol card online?
Yes, you can top up your nol card online through the RTA website, Mahboub, nol Pay, S’hail, RTA Dubai, Dubai Now and some bank apps. Top-ups made with only the tag ID need activating: wait 45 minutes to 4 hours, then tap the card in an app, at a Metro gate or a parking meter.
Is there a fee to top up a nol card?
RTA charges nothing to recharge a nol card through its own channels. Some banks may add a charge when you use their app, and Gulf News reports a AED 1 fee at ADCB. Taking leftover credit back as cash does cost money: 2.5% of the balance or AED 5, whichever is higher.
How much balance do I need to use the Metro?
RTA requires at least AED 7.50 on a Silver, Gold or Blue card, which covers the longest Silver fare. It advises keeping AED 15 so you can make the return trip. A Red Ticket works differently: it must hold at least one trip, because it stores trips rather than money.
Can I top up someone else’s nol card?
Yes. The RTA website, Mahboub and the apps only need the 10-digit tag ID, so you can add credit to a child’s or partner’s card without holding it. The owner then activates it with a tap. In nol Pay, a guardian can link family members’ personal or registered cards and schedule automatic top-ups.
Getting the most from every nol card recharge
Use nol Pay or a Metro ticket machine when you need the money now, and the website or Mahboub when you can activate it later. Keep at least AED 15 on the card, register it before you load a large balance, and keep an eye on the expiry date. After that, each nol top-up takes about a minute.
